"The Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, has summoned the US ambassador to explain the latest revelations to emerge from the files leaked by Edward Snowden, which suggest the National Security Agency tracked more than 60m phone calls in Spain in the space of a month.

Spain’s European secretary of state, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, is meeting James Costos as the White House struggles to contain a growing diplomatic crisis following accusations that the NSA monitored the phones of scores of allies, including the German chancellor, Angela Merkel.

El Mundo newspaper reported on Monday that it had seen an NSA document that showed the US spy agency had intercepted 60.5m phone calls in Spain between 10 December 2012 and 8 January this year.”* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

European leaders are demanding an explanation after new reports regarding NSA spying on U.S. allies.

29 10 / 2013

The United States has acknowledged that it needs to make changes to its intelligence gathering procedures.

The pressure is on the US to regain the trust of its European allies, amid a growing number of allegations that it has been spying on EU leaders and citizens.

The White House said that President Barack Obama had ordered a review of US surveillance practices.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters: “We recognise that there need to be additional constraints on how we gather and use intelligence.”

A group of European Members of Parliament (MEPs) have been holding talks with members of Congress in Washington on the issue.

British Labour Party MEP Claude Moraes said he and his fellow delegates were not getting all the answers they needed:

"Trust has to be rebuilt. We need to figure out why this kind of mass surveillance activity is happening and what kind of trust needs to be rebuilt," Moraes said.

The spying allegations, which have been fuelled by leaks to the press from NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, have soured US-EU relations.

In just 75 seconds, Mika Brzezinski, live on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, was able to dispel conservative anti-Obamacare lies and connect with an Obamacare agent — live on national television.

Although website glitches have marred the roll-out of Obamacare’s online exchanges, President Obama is encouraging Americans to call the hotline to sign-up, but some critics say that isn’t working either.

"By the way, we called the hotline on Monday and the automated menu redirected us to Healthcare.gov, which in turn told us to get in touch with someone at the call center," the conservative Wall Street Journal editorial page wrote on Tuesday. "In an era where Google is making self-driving cars and Amazon offers next-day delivery for just about anything, the White House plunged ahead with a system it knew to be defective and is relying on the technology of the 19th century as the fall-back."

"I got an agent! Hi there," Brzezinski exclaimed.

"Did they refer you to healthcare.gov?" MSNBC’s Ronan Farrow asked.

"No, I got a live agent," she said. "Alright, so by the way, unlike the Wall Street Journal, if you want to get through call 1-800-318-2596."

Of course, Joe Scarborough, always toeing the Republican Party line, nervously scratched his neck and tried to change the subject with a joke about Chris Christie, which fell incredible flat given Mika’s quick and easy success in getting an Obamacare representative on the line.

September 25, 2013- U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Mark Udall (D-Colo.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), and Rand Paul (R-Ky) held a press conference to introduce their bipartisan, comprehensive surveillance reform bill- The Intelligence Oversight and Surveillance Reform Act.

The bill will preserve constitutional liberties while maintaining the government’s ability to protect national security. It will amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to end dragnet domestic surveillance and other unjustified intrusions on Americans’ constitutional rights, make improvements to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), and provide for greater transparency from government entities and the private sector.

N. Korea is upping it’s rhetoric against the U.S. over sanctions imposed on it by the UN. The Whitehouse, and U.S. Secretary of Defense Hagel are taking the nuclear threat seriously, and are moving missile defense system to Guam. N. Korea claims that war could be only a few days away.

"North Korea dramatically escalated its warlike rhetoric on Thursday, warning that it had authorized plans for nuclear strikes on targets in the United States.
"The moment of explosion is approaching fast," the North Korean military said, warning that war could break out "today or tomorrow".
Pyongyang’s latest pronouncement came as Washington scrambled to reinforce its Pacific missile defenses, preparing to send ground-based interceptors to Guam and dispatching two Aegis class destroyers to the region.
Tension was also high on the North’s heavily fortified border with South Korea, after Kim Jong-Un’s isolated regime barred South Koreans from entering a Seoul-funded joint industrial park on its side of the frontier.” - AFP

About video: In the latest sign of escalating tensions with North Korea, the Pentagon said it will send an advanced ballistic missile defense system to Guam in the coming weeks, as Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel called Pyongyang a real and clear threat.

Does the Government Really ‘Support the Troops?’

"They are a new generation of activists that are traveling from Main Street USA to the hallowed halls of Congress to make their voices heard. And this time, they’ve got the Internet, over 200,000 IAVA members, and every American they’ve touched behind them. They landed in Washington with their passion and their love for country on their sleeves. CPT Melinda Russell even brought her service dog, Willow. Specialist Ann Weeby brought her 6-week-old son. Corporal Aaron Mankin brought a body covered with burns. And they all brought tremendous heart.

They are America’s combat veterans. And they believe, as George Washington once said, “When we assumed the soldier, we did not lay aside the citizen.”*

Politicians and conservatives are quick to say, “Support the troops!” But where is the action? Our veterans are suffering with massive health problems and PTSD, waiting and waiting for benefit checks. Is it any wonder the veteran suicide rate is so high? Ana Kasparian, Steve Oh (COO of The Young Turks), and Desi Doyen (Green News Report) discuss.

Children Horribly Deformed by US Chemical Weapons in Iraq

"In 2012, European researchers visited a scrap metal site in Al Zubayr, an area near Basrah in southern Iraq. A local police officer told them that the site had at one time held military scrap metal from the bloody battles waged during the American invasion. A local guard told the researchers that children had been seen playing on the scrap during that time, and both adults and children had worked disassembling the military leftovers. At one point, the guard said, members of an international organization with equipment and white suits showed up, told guards that the site was very dangerous and "quickly ran off."*

The depleted uranium usage in Iraq left lasting effects, on our own troops and in babies born with horrifying deformities in Fallujah and Basra. Is this the legacy of the war, and should people be paying more attention to these awful consequences? Ana Kasparian, Steve Oh (COO of The Young Turks), and Desi Doyen (Green News Report) discuss.

Progressives Challenging Obama’s Drone Strike Legality

"Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) is leading a small group of House Democrats in calling on President Barack Obama to release information regarding the Administration’s use of drone strikes.

In a letter sent Monday, Lee said a leaked Department of Justice memo showed an “increasing devolution of accountability, transparency, and Constitutional protections in U.S. counterterrorism operations.” The 16-page memo provided an outline of the Obama’s administration legal justification of targeted drone strikes against U.S. citizens.”

It takes a lot to challenge a president of your own party, but a group of progressive representatives are calling Obama out, demanding legal justification for deadly drone strikes. Cenk Uygur explains who the constitutional heroes are, and what they’re doing for transparency.”
