"The Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, has summoned the US ambassador to explain the latest revelations to emerge from the files leaked by Edward Snowden, which suggest the National Security Agency tracked more than 60m phone calls in Spain in the space of a month.

Spain’s European secretary of state, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, is meeting James Costos as the White House struggles to contain a growing diplomatic crisis following accusations that the NSA monitored the phones of scores of allies, including the German chancellor, Angela Merkel.

El Mundo newspaper reported on Monday that it had seen an NSA document that showed the US spy agency had intercepted 60.5m phone calls in Spain between 10 December 2012 and 8 January this year.”* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

European leaders are demanding an explanation after new reports regarding NSA spying on U.S. allies.

29 10 / 2013

The United States has acknowledged that it needs to make changes to its intelligence gathering procedures.

The pressure is on the US to regain the trust of its European allies, amid a growing number of allegations that it has been spying on EU leaders and citizens.

The White House said that President Barack Obama had ordered a review of US surveillance practices.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters: “We recognise that there need to be additional constraints on how we gather and use intelligence.”

A group of European Members of Parliament (MEPs) have been holding talks with members of Congress in Washington on the issue.

British Labour Party MEP Claude Moraes said he and his fellow delegates were not getting all the answers they needed:

"Trust has to be rebuilt. We need to figure out why this kind of mass surveillance activity is happening and what kind of trust needs to be rebuilt," Moraes said.

The spying allegations, which have been fuelled by leaks to the press from NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, have soured US-EU relations.

In just 75 seconds, Mika Brzezinski, live on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, was able to dispel conservative anti-Obamacare lies and connect with an Obamacare agent — live on national television.

Although website glitches have marred the roll-out of Obamacare’s online exchanges, President Obama is encouraging Americans to call the hotline to sign-up, but some critics say that isn’t working either.

"By the way, we called the hotline on Monday and the automated menu redirected us to Healthcare.gov, which in turn told us to get in touch with someone at the call center," the conservative Wall Street Journal editorial page wrote on Tuesday. "In an era where Google is making self-driving cars and Amazon offers next-day delivery for just about anything, the White House plunged ahead with a system it knew to be defective and is relying on the technology of the 19th century as the fall-back."

"I got an agent! Hi there," Brzezinski exclaimed.

"Did they refer you to healthcare.gov?" MSNBC’s Ronan Farrow asked.

"No, I got a live agent," she said. "Alright, so by the way, unlike the Wall Street Journal, if you want to get through call 1-800-318-2596."

Of course, Joe Scarborough, always toeing the Republican Party line, nervously scratched his neck and tried to change the subject with a joke about Chris Christie, which fell incredible flat given Mika’s quick and easy success in getting an Obamacare representative on the line.

September 25, 2013- U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Mark Udall (D-Colo.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), and Rand Paul (R-Ky) held a press conference to introduce their bipartisan, comprehensive surveillance reform bill- The Intelligence Oversight and Surveillance Reform Act.

The bill will preserve constitutional liberties while maintaining the government’s ability to protect national security. It will amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to end dragnet domestic surveillance and other unjustified intrusions on Americans’ constitutional rights, make improvements to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), and provide for greater transparency from government entities and the private sector.
